The Difference Between Feminine and Masculine Essay Farrah Fawcett once said ââ¬Å"God made man stronger but not necessarily more intelligent. He gave women intuition and femininity. And, used properly, that combination easily jumbles the brain of any man Iââ¬â¢ve ever met.â⬠Why then, do women still feel that men are superior to them? Does being feminine lower us, or make us inferior? What defines femininity, and masculinity as the opposite? In an excerpt from source B, De Beauvoir says this ââ¬Å"The terms masculine and feminine are used symmetrically only as a matter of form, as on legal papers. â⬠She makes the point that masculine and feminine are unimportant in everyday life, however if used, they are used as a term of judgment and usually negativity. She continues ââ¬Å"â⬠¦for man represents both the positive and the neutral, as is indicated by the common use of man to designate human beings in general; whereas women represents only the negative, defined by limiting criteria, without reciprocity.â⬠Women are defined by limiting criteria. What a degrading phrase. Why is it that women always get put on the back burner of respect? We are told that being a man means you are masculine, and if you are not masculine, you are not a man. But what defines masculinity? Is it being a ââ¬Å"brave soldierâ⬠as in source C, or is it being able to be in tune with your emotions? I will draw from source B again ââ¬Å"A man is in the right of being a manâ⬠¦ so there is an absolute human type, the masculine.â⬠Men are entitled to no feelings except those that exude strength, because of what we have been told since 1599. In source C, Shakespeare writes ââ¬Å"But I had not so much a man in me, And all my mother came into mine eyes, And gave me up to tears.â⬠He says crying is something from his mother, and it makes him become a man no longer. But what if they had it wrong? What if the real strength of men is being able to be feminine? In source F, a poem written by Maya Angelou, she says this ââ¬Å"Men themselves have wondered What they see in me. They try so much But they canââ¬â¢t touch My inner mystery.â⬠How fitting of a woman, the inner mystery she describes. It truly cannot be touched, or bought, or sold. It needs to be earned, and they only way to earn that is be being feminine. To close, I want to finish off with reference to source D, which I think sums up everything that is masculine or feminine. ââ¬Å" Women are told from their infancy, and taught be example of their mothers, that a little knowledge of human weakness, justly termed cunning, softness of temper, OUTWARD obedience, and a scrupulous attention to a puerile kind of propriety, will obtain them the protection of menâ⬠¦ How grossly do they insult us who thus advise us only to render ourselves gentleâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬

CSD 2260 Reavis Emphysema When people hear the medical diagnosis of Emphysema, many think immediately that one had been a regular smoker of tobacco for a long period of time. There are many different causes for the illness that can be from other factors besides smoking such as inhaling pollutants that surround oneââ¬â¢s life from vehicles and factories. Emphysema is not a medical disease that is sudden it is one that worsens over time due to the impact on the lungs. With education on this disease more individuals will use preventative measures to decrease ones risk of the disease. The definition of emphysema according to the Websterââ¬â¢s Dictionary is ââ¬Å"a condition characterized by air-filled expansions of body tissues; specifically: a condition of the lung marked by abnormal enlargement of the alveoli with loss of pulmonary elasticity that is characterized especially by shortness of breath and may lead to impairment of heart actionâ⬠(Emphysema.). Meaning that within the lungs there are small sacs that are called alveoli, where the exchange of gas and blood occurs is interfered by the sacs over filling causing an obstruction of the sacs leading to breakage. The damage of the sacs can cause complication breathing due to the scaring and of the sacs developing holes decreasing the input of the oxygen in the blood stream. One of the many disease that is associated with emphysema includes COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). This disease is a building block to emphysema, it has similar symptoms consisting of wheezing, and shortness of breath, cough, and chest tightening. Long term financing
The capital market you may remember deals with bonds and stocks. Within the capital market there exists both a primary and a secondary market. A primary market is a ââ¬Å"new issuesâ⬠market. It is here that funds rose through the sale of new securities flow from the buyers of securities to the issuers of securities. In a secondary market, existing securities are bought and sold. Transactions in these already existing securities do not provide additional funds to finance capital investment. A large company typically raises funds both publicly and privately. With a public issue, securities are sold to hundreds and often thousands of investors under a formal contract overseen by federal and state regulatory authorities. A private placement on the other hand, is made to a limited number of investors, sometimes only one, and with considerably less regulation. An example of a private placement might be a loan by a small group of insurance companies to a corporation. Thus, the two types of security issues differ primarily in the number of investors involved and in the regulations governing issuance. When a company opted for expansion, it obviously must be financed. Often the seed money (i.e. the initial financing) comes from the founders and their families and friends. For some companies, this is sufficient to get things launched, and by retaining future earnings they need no more external equity financing. For others infusions of additional external equity are necessary. Venture Capital: venture capital represents funds invested in a new enterprise. Wealthy investors and financial institutions are the major sources of venture capitals. Debt funds are sometimes provided, but it is mostly common stock that is involved. This stock is almost always initially placed privately. Initial Public Offerings: If the enterprise is successful, the owners may want to ââ¬Å"take the company publicâ⬠with a sale of common stock to outsiders. Often this desire is prompted by venture capitalists, who want to realize a cash return on their investment. In another situation, the founders may simply want to establish a value, and liquidity, for their common stock. Initial Public Offerings are accomplished through underwriters. Bonds: a bond is a long term debt instrument with a final maturity generally being 10 years or more. If the security has a final maturity shorter than 10 years, it is usually called a note. To fully understand bonds, we must be familiar with certain basic terms and common features. Par value for a bond represents the amount to be paid the lender at the bondââ¬â¢s maturity. It is also called face value or principal. Coupon rate is the interest rate on a bond for example a 13% coupon rate indicates that the issuer will pay bondholders $ 130 per annum for every $1000 par value bond that they hold. Bonds almost always have a stated maturity. This is the time when the company is obligated to pay the bondholder the par value of the bond. Preferred stocks: it is a hybrid form of financing, combining features of debt and common stock. In the event of liquidation a preferred stockholderââ¬â¢s claim on assets comes after that of creditors but before that of common stock holders. Usually, this claim is restricted to the par value of the stock, if the par value of a share of preferred stock is $100, the investors will be entitled to a maximum of $100 in settlement of the principal amount. Term loans: commercial banks are a primary source of term financing. Two features of a bank term loan distinguish it from other types of business loans. First, a term loan has a final maturity of more than 1 year. Second it most often represents credit extended under a formal loan agreement. For the most part, these loans are repayable in periodic installments. Quarterly, semiannually, or annual ââ¬â that covers both interest and principal. Lease financing: a lease is a contract; by its terms the owner of an asset (the lessor) gives another party (the lessee) the exclusive right to use the asset, usually for a specific period of time, in return for the payment of rent. Most of us are familiar with leases of houses, apartments, officers or automobiles. Recent decades have seen an enormous growth in the leasing of business assets, such as cards and trucks, computers, machinery and even manufacturing plants. An obvious advantage, the lessee incurs several obligations. First and foremost is the obligation to make periodic lease payments, usually monthly or quarterly. Almost, the lease contact specifies who is to maintain the asset. The decision to borrow rests on the relative timing and magnitude of cash flows. As it fails to appear adequate variation in stock returns, it assumes that there are no taxes or transaction cost which is not suitable in prevailing market situation. It assumes all assets of fixed quality which can never be possible, every market is not perfectly efficient, it varies on the basis of several factors. Inflation makes direct effect on the interest rate so can it be possible to remain unaffected with such change. In comparison to previous Model, Discounted Cash Flow Model (DCF) helps to determine that what one person is willing to pay today in order to obtain the expected cash flow in future years. Music is part of our lives whether we realize it or not, whether we actively participate in it or not, whether we appreciate its power or not. This is, in fact, the real power of music ? that it can affect us whether we are aware of it or not. We need only think of the music heard on the soundtrack of most movies. We may be aware of the action and the dialogue, the scenery, costumes and special effects, yet music is supporting it all and guiding the emotional context. In the best films, music is an active team player, but in the worst of films, sometimes the music is the only thing holding the story together. So important is music to film that studio executives sometimes watch ââ¬Å"rough cutsâ⬠with a temporary music track, even before the actual score is written, to get a feel for how a particular scene will play over it. Film is just one example. Television programs also have musical underscores. Many commercials use ââ¬Å"jinglesâ⬠to help sell their products ? these are tunes we ââ¬Å"just canââ¬â¢t get out of our heads. â⬠Result: we remember the product! Radio provides music 24 hours a day, seven days week, in every style imaginable. We buy our favorite music in record stores. Finally, there is live music, be it school friends with a guitar during the lunch break, a nightclub with just a few tables, a religious service with a choir and instruments, or a large concert or giant arena where thousands are gathered to share in the experience of music making. In prehistoric times, before our ancestors became masters of our world, life was mostly random and patternless, except for the seasons. Even they couldnââ¬â¢t be counted on to produce rain, snow or sun at regular intervals. As fire was harnessed, as social order and language developed, as tools improved, the rhythms of life assumed a greater organization. Emotions developed as well ? from basic animal traits of pleasure and fear, contentment and anger ? into a much more complex system. Once the basic need to survive had been adequately addressed, humankind was suddenly freed in small measure to become introspective, and to contemplate its own existence. Music was undoubtedly the accompaniment to all these discoveries. Imagine the first baby to hear its mother sing a lullaby. Imagine the first field workers to chant in rhythm as they planted or harvested. Imagine sitting around their campfires, celebrating the success of the dayââ¬â¢s hunt or lamenting the lack of rain. Before drums or flutes, before cave paintings, before basket weaving and clay pot painting, there was the human voice, capable even in earliest times of a vast range of expression. Somewhere, deep in our souls or collective unconsciousness, there is the sound of our own identity, of our connection to the universal power, which music amplifies to our great satisfaction. Whether we are aware of it or not. So why should music play such an important and integral role in our lives? As it turns out, research over the last few decades has increasingly shown that music, and in particular the singing and playing of music, helps the brain develop much more fully and extensively, especially in our early years. Music makes us brighter, more intelligent, more logical, more rational, and more capable. It improves study habits and test scores. It builds a better sense of self and community. It aids in our general sense of well-being and improves our quality of life. At times, it brings us closer to the divine in all of us. A recent study even suggests that the act of singing improves the immune system. To answer a question with a question: Why shouldnââ¬â¢t music play an important role in our lives? Given what music can do for all of us, but especially for children, it is imperative that we work to offer opportunities for children to become exposed to music, and to begin to understand what makes it work and why. This is why Los Angeles Chamber Singers is so committed to educational outreach and so appreciative of the Shumei Arts Councilââ¬â¢s efforts to bring about Januaryââ¬â¢s What Makes a Chorus? Program. Other research by the San Francisco School District tells us that just one exposure to music, or to any of the other art forms, is all it takes to change a childââ¬â¢s life and keep him or her involved with the arts in some way. The window is open from birth through the age of 15, at its peak around eight, and the earlier the exposure the better. Additionally, early familiarity with many art forms increases tolerance for and pleasure in all art forms. Children and teens who only listen to rock music may grow dissatisfied with it when they reach their forties but will be too afraid or unfamiliar to try other genres. Those same children exposed to other forms in childhood may prefer rock during their twenties and thirties, but find the adjustment to classical or jazz easier and more familiar. Some people have wondered why we take the approach Iââ¬â¢ve come to call ââ¬Å"deconstruction. â⬠Itââ¬â¢s actually in direct response to something I learned in an education course in college. The key term is ââ¬Å"frame of reference,â⬠or as Aaron Copland said, ââ¬Å"What to listen for. â⬠Nobody learns anything in this world without a frame of reference, that is, without some preparation for and understanding of the elements that comprise the topic of study. Take, for example, the sentence: ââ¬Å"The impending war with Iraq could either be the next Grenada or the next Viet Nam. â⬠Most of us would recognize this to be a metaphoric reference to the length and severity of the conflict, with Grenada being a ââ¬Å"piece of cakeâ⬠and Viet Nam being a protracted disaster. We have a frame of reference that allows us to comprehend the full intent of that sentence. Now, imagine that an immigrant child of 13 from a poor country had to stop his education in the third grade to help his parentsââ¬â¢ farm, later moved to the United States, and finally returned to school. His English is poor and he has missed a large chunk of his education along the way. His social studies teacher asks him to read and explain that sentence to the rest of the class. He manages to say the words but canââ¬â¢t begin to explain them. Yes, he hears ââ¬Å"Iraqâ⬠mentioned everyday in the news but doesnââ¬â¢t know where it is on a map or anything about the first Gulf War. Heââ¬â¢s heard of Viet Nam and knows there was a war there a long time ago, but has no body of facts on which to draw, and, heââ¬â¢s never heard of Grenada. After other students answer the question, the first student awakens to an understanding that moments ago he lacked and this is due to his newfound frame of reference. In music, each song or work exists in a context. Simple folk tunes are just that: easily accessible to anyone upon first hearing. The elements of basic Rockââ¬â¢nââ¬â¢Roll are a standard chord progression, a catchy melody and lyrics, with some decorative additions. The Blues follow a standard chord progression, while the first line of text is repeated three times before the ââ¬Å"punch lineâ⬠is given. In classical music, the context, or frame of reference can be much more complex. For this reason, itââ¬â¢s important to break it down into smaller, more intelligible pieces. For example, a beautiful 17th century motet for double choir may be quite sonorous and entertaining on its own. But once itââ¬â¢s explained that: the first chorus is comprised of higher voices who represent the angels in heaven; the second chorus of lower voices represent the people on earth; theyââ¬â¢re having a conversation about a miracle; the miracle happens when both choruses sing together for the first time; and we can tell that because the rhythm changes from a quick chatter to very slow, long notes, while the harmony changes from simple chords with shared notes to complex harmonies with no shared notes. With this information, the listener can have a much deeper experience with the music while itââ¬â¢s being performed, and, equally importantly, remember something about it later ? all because of frame of reference. In Mozartââ¬â¢s time, the aristocracy was well-educated in all facets of music, especially the formal structure, and knew the capabilities of each of the instruments. They could appreciate when music was played well because, in all likelihood, they had learned to play an instrument or two and had built up quite a library of scores. Before electricity, there was only live music, so many people automatically learned to play or sing to keep themselves entertained. When they went to hear a new symphony, they knew in advance that it would have four movements, that the first would be an allegro (fast tempo) in sonata form (AABBCAB, where A and B are contrasting themes and C represents a lengthy thematic development of those themes); the second would be a slow and graceful movement; the third would be the minuet and trio (a shorter, dance-like movement with a contrasting middle section and a reprise of the minuet); and a finale which was also marked allegro, in one of several forms, such as a rondo. They also knew about key structure and relationships, so that if the first movement were in C, the second might be in F, the third in C for the minuet and G for the trio, and the finale again in C. With this grand set of expectations or frame of reference, they would be able to see the composerââ¬â¢s latest creation in the context of all the other symphonies they had heard, and would recognize at every step what was usual, what was a departure, and how successful the composer had been at both. When you listen to music with this level of understanding, you canââ¬â¢t help but be actively engaged in the process and its outcome. You canââ¬â¢t help but marvel at the true genius of the master composers. And you canââ¬â¢t help but grow as a human being. There is only one way to accomplish this level of musical literacy and take advantage of all its inherent benefits: that is to keep music a part of every school curriculum. Itââ¬â¢s the path to well-being, harmony, and peace. Itââ¬â¢s the path all of us need to continue to follow.
